NJ used to be the fake ID of choice back in the day

[–] klemptor@startrek.website 15 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Yeah you could easily get them made on a machine at the boardwalk

[–] AtariDump@lemmy.world 4 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

Zoltar? He made mine for me.

"I wish I was big!"

hands over card

"You're now Anthony Moriano, a 42 year old barber from Passaic. Enjoy!"

The true strange part is why this was in Kentucky

/joking

Those New Jerseyans know what they did.

[–] DaMonsterKnees@lemmy.world 38 points 21 hours ago (4 children)

Not to be reductionist, but as a fellow NJ alum, my assumption was entirely that everyone conjures the image in their head of the factories and general urban decay you encounter as soon as you cross the Delaware memorial. You're then accosted by the east coast autobahn terrordome that is the NJT until you gtfo.

I get it, but it was unironically named the Garden State because it was once apart of the bread basket of the first 13, and it's honestly quite verdant and pleasant throughout.

Again though, I get it.

I'm visiting NJ for the first time through a work trip this week.

Reminds me just as much as Massachusetts or Maine. Lots of greenery, and definitely not as bad as maybe I thought going in

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 4 points 10 hours ago

I make the East Coast round trip drive about twice a year, and your description of the southbound trip out of NYC is bang on accurate.

[–] CatsPajamas@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 13 hours ago

I feel like the popular conception of Jersey is Newark and the Sopranos and nothing in between

[–] kelseybcool@lemmy.world 22 points 20 hours ago

I can say that I'm guilty of this and was pleasantly surprised when I visited for a few days during a work trip some years ago.

That said, I did fly into Newark so y'all still had some explaining to do. Yes I know about the remodel, but it wasn't done when I was there so that doesn't count 😛

Admittedly, as the best state in America, there is very little reason for us to leave. But we do still like to travel, just like the folks in the lesser states. We shouldn't be deified like this.

[–] rumba@lemmy.zip 2 points 32 minutes ago

That's actually the key, this was posted in a NJ hotel. (it's old Reddit but i was there when the bombs dropped)

They're worried about locals renting a room to defile trying to keep stuff out of their house.

[–] HeyJoe@lemmy.world 5 points 16 hours ago

I love my state, but I leave because it's way cheaper to vacation somewhere else!

[–] itsgroundhogdayagain@lemmy.ml 24 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

It's a great place to be from.

[–] agamemnonymous@sh.itjust.works 12 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

"from" being the operative word.

Bruce Springsteen's breakout hit was about getting out of Jersey ASAP.

[–] curbstickle@anarchist.nexus 17 points 18 hours ago* (last edited 17 hours ago) (1 children)

I know youre joking, but so others know - Springsteen's breakout hit was Born to Run. Its about escaping the pressures if life. About going for a long drive away from the factories (blue collar family), getting away from it all on the road.

He still lives in NJ, he's a proponent of LGBTQ rights, believes strongly in the dignity of work (before anyone misconstrues this, this means that all jobs should be respected equally), he donates his time and his money on a local, state, and regional level in campaigns to address hunger, resources for low income families, antipoverty grants through his own foundation, etc. He's also been this way since the 1980s so not new either.

Edit: Just to note, my uncle is a massive Springsteen fan, so I have heard about him basically from childhood on up.

[–] MTZ@lemmy.world 5 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

I'm not a fan but I definitely think the boss is cool AF.

[–] LH0ezVT@sh.itjust.works 1 points 10 minutes ago

Same. I am not the biggest fan of his music, but from what I've read, he seems like a somewhat decent human being

I lived across the river of NYC without paying the NYC rent prices.

NJ's shores are nice. Good malls too.

[–] ayyy@sh.itjust.works 4 points 16 hours ago

(Limited exceptions.)

The food of the gods.

It's pretty much a staple in the New Jersey food landscape and for good reason.

Really we have to ask what a wookie was doing on Endor?

[–] Treczoks@lemmy.world 5 points 17 hours ago (3 children)

For someone not in the US: what kind of shop is that, and why is it banning people from NJ?

[–] ayyy@sh.itjust.works 8 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

It’s a “shop” if you mean it’s short for “photoshop”. It is not a real thing, only a joke. There would be no reason, we just have lighthearted rivalries between states.

Apart from the comments explaining this is probably fake, I think the NJ hate that drove it comes from their populous, rich neighbors like NYC just doing a garden-(state-)variety "I hate poor/rural people."

[–] tempest@lemmy.ca 4 points 16 hours ago* (last edited 16 hours ago)

My guess would be some sort of government service or charity whose funding is state related but is close to a border with another state.

They can probably serve out of state people but are not set up for it.

That, or New Jersey still has laughable IDs that are essentially laminated paper. The US is weirdly stuck in the past that way. Only recently have their IDs started to resemble ones from 30 years ago in Canada.

[–] klemptor@startrek.website 3 points 16 hours ago (2 children)

As a proud New Jerseyan, I offer a hearty fuck you to whoever made this lameass sign.

[–] Tripp@midwest.social 10 points 15 hours ago (1 children)
[–] klemptor@startrek.website 14 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

Well first of all, that's the standard greeting in New Jersey

[–] AtariDump@lemmy.world 2 points 8 hours ago

Hey fellow New Jersian; fuck you too!

[–] rumba@lemmy.zip 3 points 15 hours ago

The best part, is it was a New Jerseyan that made it.

Trying to keep people from renting local hotel rooms for nefarious or dirty things.
