Ask Lemmy
A Fediverse community for open-ended, thought provoking questions
Rules: (interactive)
1) Be nice and; have fun
Doxxing, trolling, sealioning, racism, and toxicity are not welcomed in AskLemmy. Remember what your mother said: if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. In addition, the site-wide Lemmy.world terms of service also apply here. Please familiarize yourself with them
2) All posts must end with a '?'
This is sort of like Jeopardy. Please phrase all post titles in the form of a proper question ending with ?
3) No spam
Please do not flood the community with nonsense. Actual suspected spammers will be banned on site. No astroturfing.
4) NSFW is okay, within reason
Just remember to tag posts with either a content warning or a [NSFW] tag. Overtly sexual posts are not allowed, please direct them to either !asklemmyafterdark@lemmy.world or !asklemmynsfw@lemmynsfw.com.
NSFW comments should be restricted to posts tagged [NSFW].
5) This is not a support community.
It is not a place for 'how do I?', type questions.
If you have any questions regarding the site itself or would like to report a community, please direct them to Lemmy.world Support or email info@lemmy.world. For other questions check our partnered communities list, or use the search function.
6) No US Politics.
Please don't post about current US Politics. If you need to do this, try !politicaldiscussion@lemmy.world or !askusa@discuss.online
Reminder: The terms of service apply here too.

Wait what did they do? I'm new
the mods who run it (and also created the lemmy software which makes this whole thing more complex) love stalin and mao (theres a reason why its Lemmy.ml and not .com, the ml stands for marxist-leninist) and putin and often silence opinions they disagree with on their platform. They use their instance to spread their propaganda about authoritarism and communism and while their aren't the only instance to do that, the other ones weren't run by the Lemmy devs, so other instances defederated from them - I'm talking about places like hexbear and lemmygrad
theres people who've been on Lemmy longer than me and have spent time documenting some of the more insane mod actions and views of the .ml admins and Im gunna go find that right now
edit: ok I found it, here's a list of stuff the admins there have done: https://lemmy.world/post/29072279 and here's the community about documenting stuff I got the post from https://lemmy.world/c/meanwhileongrad@sh.itjust.works
posting these as .world links because .ml has blocked them (which of course they did) so I don't then you can sub to that comm from your account
Thanks for the links
Created Lemmy.
This has made a lot of people angry, and has been widely regarded as a bad move.
Those bastards!
Yup, and check !meanwhileongrad@sh.itjust.works or my periodically updated recap post for why everyone!
Sure, why not. And they can do the same over to their side. And stealing certian content from Reddit would also be good.
I assume crossposts are handled properly by Lemmy's feeds? I don't think I've noticed duplicates much. My answer would change if not, because there's going to be no way to predict people's replication preferences.
Why though?
We can just subscribe to the community on lemmy.ml, there's no point reposting when it's already there ready to federate.
Because cm0002 is reposting content without prior permission, it made me think about it, people got a real hate boner for lemmy.ml but maybe they have differing opinions for reposting?
"Reposting content without prior permission"?
Yup
Do you think that people generally need to ask permission before reposting something (non-OC, anyhow) that was shared on a public forum?

Lulz. I just stole your comment. It's mine now.
NOOOOO I'M GOING TO SUE YOU IN LEMMY COURT
Lemmy Court sounds like a fun community idea.
Lulz. I just stole your comment. It’s mine now.
Yes I will download your car too.

I reckon that this topic is - at least partly - about my desire to not have my OC insta reposted by them. So it is about OC.
I don't mind the normal cross post, but this half automated reposting, with the stated goal to reduce the already measly interaction i get posting niche stuff, that i don't like. But apparently, at least according to @SatansMaggotyCumFart@lemmy.world , I need to see a mental health expert for taking issue with that.

They did not falsely claim to be the OC creator, and they credited you.

This is a public forum. If you intend to make money off of it later, you shouldn't be freely posting the images publically without any watermarking. I don't know what jurisdiction would apply here on this federated forum, but to give an example of one of the most litigated jurisdictions, the USA:
Copyright exists automatically in an original work of authorship once it is fixed, but a copyright owner can take steps to enhance the protections. The most important step is registering the work. Registering a work is not mandatory, but for U.S. works, registration (or refusal) is necessary to enforce the exclusive rights of copyright through litigation. Timely registration also allows copyright owners to seek certain types of monetary damages and attorney fees if there is a lawsuit, and also provide a presumption that information on the registration certificate is correct.
Copyright registration also provides value to the public overall. It facilitates the licensing marketplace by allowing people to find copyright ownership information, and it provides the public with notice that someone is claiming copyright protection. It also provides a record of this nation’s creativity.
Perhaps you should register your works if you are serious about it.

Crossposting doesn't re-upload, it still links to your original image. This is essentially someone finding your website, and admires an image, then share the link to the image. If you go to your profile and delete it, its also gone from the crosspost.

@cm0002@lemmy.world For news articles, links or even c/asklemmy questions, its totally fine. For OC content, I'd probably just try to not piss off people. Like it's not morally wrong or anything, I get that you intent is just wanting to share, but like... if the original creator explicitly asked you not to... I'd just not.
Thank you. I certainly don't have the ambition to make money off off my content, I just want to share it and have fun without being bothered by this person and have my content dragged into political obsessions. That's it. It would be nice if they could just leave me alone, but they don't.
Crosspost it yourself and take his job away.
I may cross post whenever I see fit, sure, but I have no interest to have my content in our no-life-bot's toxic repost cloaca.
I don't mind the normal cross post, but this half automated reposting
FYI, it's not automated, the most automation I use is notifications. Everything else is done completely manually. And crossposting is easy, a notification comes in and I can take care of it in most cases right away wherever I'm at because, ya know, smartphones LOL it just takes me a few minutes lmao
Also, you're slinging insults at or about mods, comms, admins and whole instances that have nothing to do with it so maybe that's where they're coming from on that lol
I said half automated. I am slinging insults at you, and the mod, not instances wtf, that is your life's mission. I sling insults at you because you ignored my polite requests to not please repost my content there.
He also steals crow pictures which I’ve reported to every crow picture stealing authority imaginable and all I get are welfare calls from mental health experts.
Very funny, right? That I don't want to have my pictures insta reposted, with the stated goal to reduce the already measly interaction i get posting niche stuff? You thought that was so funny you drew them that avatar. Bravo.
Everything's got to be about politics here.
They stole that crow picture from me.
I’ve been reporting it to anyone who will listen and the only things I get back are what’s Lemmy and why is a crow wearing a pirate hat?
We’re not enemies we’re brothers bonjour.
Haha. At least you have some good humour and you drew that pirate crow quite nice. Cheers brother.
Everything’s got to be about politics here.
what
Crow politics you know?
Yeah I voted for the Ca-Caw Party
Repost, no.
They should grow organically on nicer instances.
I try to unsubscribe ML communities when I find a decent alternative anywhere else.
I don't mind when people crosspost.
yeah for sure
the main reason i havent defederated is bc of how much stuff is from there
I have, before, posted one item that I thought was interesting on !technology@beehaw.org to !technology@lemmy.world, as I know that beehaw.org has defederated from lemmy.world and the item was interesting and otherwise lemmy.world users wouldn't have seen it.
I don't think that I'd try to mirror the complete content of a community, though. I mean, different communities may have different interests.
