Why do the roads SW of Cancun make such weird patterns. It's almost like a ladder or just long roads to nowhere with single houses on either side. I have seen this in other central/south American countries as well. What political/legal/geographical/etc factors make it turn out like this?

I >>KNOW<< there is someone out there who can understand and explain this satisfactorily. I just need to find the right community, group, etc.

While in thought, sometimes something funny pops up, or I make a 'joke' and laugh at it, not always audibly but that does happen.

I wondered how common that is, so thought I'd ask, How often do you laugh at your own thoughts?

Fingernails are the same size no matter what. Long ass fingers would be kinda cool. But having another 8 arms in such close proximity would be annoying. Thumbs are the same size. Short ass arms though would mean the whole underside of your arm would technically be your arm pit.

I know the reputation that AI has on Lemmy, however I've found that some users (like myself) have found that LLMs can be useful tools.

What are fellow AI users using these tools for? Furthermore, what models are you using that find the most useful?

Life has been so hard lately, I'm going to school which means I'm working less hours and barely scraping by. I have all these art skills and backgrounds in animation and design, a plethora of computer knowledge and I'm pretty crafty. But I cant for the life of me seem to figure out what I should sell. I've tried Etsy, with a few paintings, some 3d prints I've designed, even a coloring book I made, but alas, I've got a total of 2 views and no sales.

Maybe I just don't know what people want, what would you guys buy online?

If rivers were mascots, who would we be?

I think we should be that "cursed", clean river in India

I find adding a crank to anything quaint and hilarious. Even if just photoshopped^tm^

A steam whistle that required a good crank and verifying subscrrription overrr dialup would end me

Edit: it must be a crank and it has to play the all around the blueberry bush progress song like the Sid's handy jack in the box in Toy Story 1

edit: OK, I think this blog post that /u/NebLem linked decides it. Hard line at "not a rooming house" but I don't want you to sleep outside tonight.

ORIGINAL:

I remember when I was a kid and on hard times I was taken in by a friend and his dad. It saved me from being on the streets. This sort of situation seems to be developing now that I'm middle aged and my young adult children have friends with less than stable home lives. All these kids are LGBTQ or adjacent, some have diagnosed mental illness.

I want to help, but man... what happens if it goes sideways? I would hate to throw someone out if personal problems got too much. We have the space and these kids are over here all the time anyway, they just don't have a room and don't pay anything. Made some pretty kickass food last night though. Money is starting to get pretty tight what with food prices increasing, my insurance just went up, yadda yadda. I was thinking something like $500/mo since I'm already paying for everything, this money would of course help. Seems like two, maybe three kids need shelter.

To be clear, it isn't imminent but probably by October. So let's see what Lemmy thinks I should do:

1: No, we will not run a rooming house.

2: Yes, but. You don't have to pay money and are still a house guest. Please continue to pick up after yourself and buy food when you can.

3: Yes, I will create a few private areas in my basement and you pay me rent. We will be roommates but it's still my and my wife's house.

edit: looks like I would definitely need a formal lease as soon as someone brings a suitcase in for more than a night.

Colorado: Guests become tenants after staying for over 14 days within six months

sounds like I already have a couple tenants.

I saw it on 4chan one time and I liked it but lost the image and cant find it anymore

It was laying down I think and also the hat was possibly an emoji or icon that maybe looked clearly photoshopped on but it also could have been a real one

As per title, if you had to switch away from Spotify ASAP, what streaming service would you go with? Ideally something around the same price range, meaning the change won't incur in extra expenses. Also good if the service does its job well: playing music and paying artists. Any feature parity with Spotify is a bonus, except podcasts, which don't require a paid streaming service. Or audiobooks. Focus on music. No piracy either (it's illegal). The more money going to artists, the better.

Edit: extra bonus points if it is not 'Murican! Also, piracy is very illegal!!!

I don't understand this idea completely myself but it's an evolved form of technocracy with autonomous systems, suggest me some articles to read up on because in the field of politics I am quite illiterate. So it goes like this:

  • Multiple impenetrable, isolated AI expert systems that make rule based decisions (unlike black boxes, eg. LLMs).
  • All contribute to a notion and the decision will be picked much like in a distributed system, for fairness and equality.
  • Then humans are involved, but they too are educated, elected individuals and some clauses that stop them from gaming the system and corrupting it.
  • These human representatives can either pick from list of decisions from AI systems or support the already given notion or drop it altogether. They can suggest notions and let AI render it but humans can't create notions directly.

Benefits:

  • Generally speaking, due to the way the system will be programmed, it won't dominate or supress and most of the actions will be justified with a logic that puts human lives first and humans profit second.
  • No wars will break out since, it's not human greed that's holding the power
  • Defence against non-{systemized} states would be taken care by military and similar AI expert systems but the AI will never plan to expand or compromise a life of a human for offense

Cons:

  • Security vulnerabilities can target the system and take down the government's corner piece
  • No direct representation of humans, only representation via votes on notions and suggestions to AI
  • Might end up in AI Apocalypse situation or something I dont know

The thoughts are still new to me, so I typed them out before thinking on paper. Hence, I am taking suggestions for this system!

tl;dr is let AI rule us, because hard coded-rule based decision maker is better than a group of humans whose intents can always be masked and unclear.

I think I'm at like +3

I overall like new technology, but just a bit fearful at malicious people misusing it. Its not technology I fear, its the people.

Hi all!

I just saw that an upvote in a science community wasn't going through, because I'm somehow banned - don't have any idea why, but that's just a side issue.

Is there a way to see which communities banned me or do I just see it, when I want to interact in said community?
And for the side issue: is there a way to see why I was banned?

Thanks in advance!

Edit: thanks to all for the answers! Didn't know where to see the modlog

We are having a family breakfast and the debate came up. Do you butter the toast before putting on the peanut butter? Or do you just put the peanut butter straight on your toast?
